The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
